Blog Eight

I disagree with my classmate’s blog titled, “Changing goals (blog stage 7).” Algebra II should be required for all high school students. As my classmate mention many students will drop out of school because some students think it will be waste of time taking algebra II, while they can take other class or could be working. First off, I think students drop out of school because they simply don’t like school, I don’t think algebra II is a reason for students to drop out. Many students now a day they still don’t know if they want to keep going to school to pursue a degree in math/science  all they want to do is graduate at least from high school and get their diploma. In the other hand, what will happen if they want to continue college later on in life? Will they have to take algebra II? Or just go straight to college algebra? I think keeping Algebra II will be the best decision for all students to have the same core class requirement regardless on their plan for the future if they decide to go to college after a few years. In conclusion, the education system should keep the same requirements; it would not hurt any student to gain any extra knowledge.

"Abortion Affiliates"

The article that I read was about a Texas lawmaker who introduced legislation that would nullify a controversial the Abortion Affiliate rule, banning from Medicaid programs that offer abortion along with other health care services to low- income women. Rep. Lon Burnam, a House Democrat is against for those who want to have abortion as part of Women’s Health Care because it will put in danger access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, diabetes testing , STD testing  and birth control services for 50,000 of the state’s poorest women. Burnam is preventing Planned Parenthood from getting excluded from the program because of women getting abortion, but Government Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott strongly support the Abortion Affiliate Rule. However, the abortion affiliate ban will be a reason for the state to lose federal dollars. The president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Ken S. Lambrecht said, “ Women’s health care providers in North Texas and across the State are already reeling from the Texas Legislature’s drastic and politically motivated cuts to women’s health care funding.”

I agree with Burnam. Women should not use health care providers who also provide abortion. Health care should be used only to protect the health of women who rely on the Women’s Health Program. It is true that everyone has the right to abort anytime and anywhere, but I think there also people who care about the human being inside the women’s belly and any public health program shouldn’t cover abortions of women who feel differently; since it’s their own decisions,  It should come out of their own pockets. I also think providing women with health care for abortion is like paying someone to kill a life. In conclusion Women’s Health care should only be covering the necessary of women.

Critique on classmate's blog

In response to my classmate’s blog, “healthcare in Texas” I agree, that in 2012 it was hard to gain a health care insurance. Governor Rick Perry and Senator Ted Cruz they are always against something and it seems that they are not pleased in making a difference in Texas. On the other hand now that Obama passed the Affordable Care Act Texans are required to get their health care coverage or else they will get a fine. Now, Perry and Cruz won’t be opposed about it because it is law that every state required so now children and elderly will have a health care coverage. I also believe a fine should not be required because some people don’t have the money to be paying for healthcare coverage.

Where is my plastic bag?

On March 1, 2013, a ban on single-use paper and plastic bags was officially implemented and it affected stores in Austin. Dallas and Laredo want to pass this law as well, which I think it will make the whole state pass the law of banning of plastic bags. Since 2008 they been deciding whether the ban of bag should pass or not? People think plastic bags are affecting the environment in Austin.
Phil Rozenski, director of Hilex Poly, said “this isn’t just plastic retail bags” I think he referred to the people who works at making the bags will lose their jobs. According to the American Progressive Bag Association, 4,500 people work at 34 plastic bag manufacturing across Texas. In Laredo they are arguing about not passing the law but they want to reduce ordinance is more likely; therefore, they won’t be like in Washington, D.C and Montgomery, Maryland they pay 5 cents per plastic bags and Brownsville pay $1 for an unlimited number of bags. In Brownsville, bag ban entered in favor and people pay $1 they thought it was temporary so people can bring their reusable bags but the fee has tripled from 2011 to 2012. All the money that any local stores makes from the bag are getting a small percentage of every bag they sell and the rest of it goes to the city.
I think Austin should not ban plastic shopping bags because there’s people coming from different states and they are surprised that Austin does not give plastic bags. People who goes to any local stores they will have to buy their own bags. I work in a retail store and I see people coming from different states and whenever I ask them if they need a bag they look at me weird because they are expecting to receive free bags just like in their states, and sometimes they ask me if they can get a plastic bag instead of the paper bag. I let them know that we no longer have plastic bags and they have to buy or bring their own bag. Therefore, not only use the bags for shopping but also for other things around the house.  Additionally, I’ve seen customers stealing at work and that is a big problem because they take their own bags and they walk out like nothing. In my opinion they should not ban plastic bags, the bag is not the major big problem for the environment there are other things that is affecting as well.
